LME zinc cash settled in the $3,546–3,599 per tonne range in early July 2026, with cash trading above the three-month price — a backwardation signalling tight nearby physical supply (Westmetall, LME zinc cash settlement data). LME zinc stocks fell 54% year-on-year to 113,670 tonnes, with on-warrant (immediately deliverable) stock down more than 80%, leaving roughly 156,000 tonnes of total exchange inventory against a global market consuming on the order of 14 million tonnes annually — under four days of global consumption held in exchange warehouses (BigMint, ILZSG: Global refined zinc market shifts to 33,000t deficit in CY25). Calendar-year 2025 LME cash averaged approximately $2,867 per tonne, up 3% year-on-year, and the International Lead and Zinc Study Group has forecast a widening deficit of roughly 129,000 tonnes of refined zinc for 2026.
Roughly 60% of global zinc consumption goes into galvanizing — coating steel to prevent corrosion — making automotive and construction steel demand the single largest driver of the zinc price (MetalCharts, Zinc price and demand drivers). Galvanized-steel penetration in automotive manufacturing is close to saturated in developed markets (90–95% globally) but remains far lower in large developing markets — roughly 23% in India versus 60% in China — implying a structural, multi-year demand growth runway independent of any single year’s price cycle (Rzzro Intelligence, Zinc treatment charge collapse threatens smelter viability, citing International Zinc Association data, 29 Jun 2026).
The 2026 benchmark zinc treatment charge (TC) — the fee smelters earn for converting mined concentrate into refined metal — fell to around $80 per dry metric tonne, a ten-year low and less than a third of the 2024 level, squeezing smelter margins even as refined metal itself stays scarce (Rzzro Intelligence, Zinc treatment charge collapse threatens smelter viability, 29 Jun 2026). Nyrstar’s Budel smelter in the Netherlands (315,000 tonnes-per-year capacity) has run at reduced rates since late 2024, Glencore’s Portovesme smelter in Italy has been placed into care and maintenance, and Glencore has separately cut output at its McArthur River and Mount Isa zinc mining operations — a coordinated supply response to unprofitable treatment economics that is reinforcing, not relieving, the exchange-inventory squeeze described above.
Hong Kong was approved as an LME warehouse location from 20 January 2025, with zinc among the metals eligible for storage at the initial approved facilities — positioning exchange-certified inventory closer to Chinese refining and consumption centers than the LME’s legacy European hubs (Bloomberg, LME approves Hong Kong as warehouse location to woo mainland, 20 Jan 2025).
China’s National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration has repeatedly auctioned base metals, including zinc, from national reserves to cool domestic prices: 30,000 tonnes of zinc were released alongside copper and aluminium on 5–6 July 2021 (South China Morning Post, China to auction copper, aluminium and zinc from state metal reserves), a further 50,000 tonnes of zinc were released alongside copper and aluminium around 22 July 2021 (The State Council of China, Third batch of state reserve metal auction, 22 Jul 2021), and a combined 150,000 tonnes of copper, aluminium, and zinc were released on 1 September 2021 to temper rising commodity input costs (The State Council of China, Reserve metal release, 1 Sep 2021).
No major new SRB zinc release has been reported in the 2025–26 window, but the mechanism remains institutionally available, and the combination of near-record-low LME on-warrant stock and a widening ILZSG-forecast deficit is precisely the market condition that triggered the 2021 releases. A zinc-backed token would need to treat Chinese state-reserve policy as a live tail risk to price stability — a lever no private custodian or exchange can hedge against, and one with no equivalent in the gold or silver market structure.
Zinc trades at a fraction of copper’s per-tonne value, meaning storage, insurance, and financing costs consume a larger proportional share of any small-denomination token’s value than for copper, nickel, or precious metals — the same structural issue that has discouraged physical zinc ETPs historically. Because zinc demand is overwhelmingly industrial — steel galvanising, die-casting alloys, and chemicals — rather than store-of-value or jewelry demand as with gold and silver, there is little natural retail investor appetite for fractional zinc ownership in the way PAXG or a gold token attracts savers. Any zinc tokenization use case is therefore more likely to emerge from industrial supply-chain financing or inventory-management needs than from retail investment demand, a pattern distinct from every precious-metal token launched to date.
The Chinese strategic-reserve precedent documented above means a zinc-backed token’s reference price carries a policy-intervention risk that gold, silver, and even copper do not carry to the same degree, since China does not hold comparably influential strategic reserves in those markets at the same relative scale. No issuer has yet proposed a zinc token design that addresses this risk, and the LME’s own electronic warrant infrastructure — while capable of underpinning a token technically — does not resolve the pricing-transparency problem created by state reserve actions.
